Wrapping up an incredible summer as a SURF Fellow in the Newman Lab at Caltech! I worked on understanding how bacteria survive when they stop growing and enter low-energy "maintenance" states. These cells become very tolerant to antibiotics and are a major reason why chronic infections are so hard to treat. Using electrochemistry, I found that this survival strategy is far more widespread across species than previously known.
