Every time I see a house plan like this my heart sinks. Open-plan kitchen/living space, with an open stair serving two floors of bedrooms above. It may look good on a plan, but in a three-storey house that stair is also the principal escape route. A fire in the kitchen will compromise it very quickly. As architects, it is incumbent on us to get this right. We have to understand the regulations, assess the risk and sometimes tell clients something they don’t want to hear.
