In 1995, Katalin Karikó was demoted. In 2023, she won the Nobel Prize in Medicine. The research behind both events was mRNA. Karikó grew up in Kisújszállás, Hungary. Her father was a butcher; her mother became a bookkeeper. At age 14, she travelled to a week-long national Biology competition in Budapest, 150km from her hometown.
